چکیده

BACKGROUND Recent investigations suggest that serum adiponectin levels are negatively associated with the development of aggressive prostate cancer, however, not all epigenetic studies support the inverse association. METHODS We analyzed serum adiponectin levels, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, and outcomes of prostate cancer screening of 2,939 participants of a PSA-based screening program conducted by a single institute in Japan. RESULTS The median body mass index (BMI) of the participants was 23.9 kg/m(2), and 31% had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2). The adiponectin levels were significantly and negatively correlated with BMI (r =  -0.260, P < 0.0001). However, a significant and positive correlation was observed between adiponectin levels and PSA levels (r = 0.054, P = 0.0061). After screening, 24 (0.82%) patients were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Interestingly, the adiponectin levels of the 24 prostate cancer patients (average 9.86 μg/mL) were significantly higher than those of the 2,817 participants with PSA levels < 4 ng/mL (average 7.63 μg/mL) (P = 0.0049). However, when restricted to the eight high-risk prostate cancer patients, the adiponectin levels did not differ from those of the participants with PSA levels < 4 ng/mL. The age-adjusted cancer detection rate of the participants was calculated by stratifying the BMI (cut-off level 25 kg/m(2)) and adiponectin levels (cut-off level 6.7 μg/mL). The cancer detection rate in the high-BMI and high-adiponectin group was 1.67%, which was the highest among all groups. CONCLUSIONS There was a significant positive correlation between adiponectin levels and PSA levels. The present findings also suggest that the incidence of low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer might be increased in overweight men with high serum adiponectin levels.

Detection of prostate cancer by an FDG-PET cancer screening program: results from a Japanese nationwide survey

Objective(s): The aim of this study was to analyze detection rates and effectiveness of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) cancer screening program for prostate cancer in Japan, which is defined as a cancer-screening program for subjects without known cancer. It contains FDG-PET aimed at detection of cancer at an early stage with or without additional screening tests ...

Age Specific Reference Levels of Serum Prostate-Specific Antigen, Prostate Volume and Prostate Specific Antigen Density in Healthy Iranian Men

Background: It is relevant to highlight that there is not a precise and perfect report on either 95 percentile value (upper limit of normal range) or on appropriate reference intervals for serum PSA in Iranian population. Objective: To determine age-specific reference ranges for serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration and PSA density (PSAD) and prostate volumes in a population of he...

The Role of Adiponectin in Prostate Cancer: A Narrative Review

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common type of cancer among men over 60 years old. The aggressiveness and mortality of PCa can be correlated with obesity. Adipose tissue-derived cytokines such as adiponectin may explain the correlation between PCa and obesity. Since the correlation between adiponectin and aggressive PCa is still not fully evaluated, we aimed to investigate the probable role o...

What is the most appropriate test in detecting prostate cancer in patients with intermediate prostate specific antigen levels?

Abstract   Background: Regarding the variety of tests present for detecting and also screening   prostate cancer and also bearing in mind the advantages and disadvantages of   these tests we decided to re-evaluate these tests (total prostate specific antigen and all   of its modifications) in detecting prostate cancer in men with intermediate serum   PSAlevels.   Methods: Following a cross se...

Assessing the Diagnostic Value of Plasma-Free DNA in Prostate Cancer Screening

Background: Prostate cancer is the second form of cancer among men worldwide. For early cancer detection, we should identify tumors in initial stages before the physical signs become visible. The present study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of cell-free DNA (cfDNA), its comparison with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level in prostate cancer screening and also in patients with localized ...
